"Jacob was born on October 5, 1844, in Allen County, Indiana. His parents were Jacob and Nancy (Hatfield) Notestine. He was actually "Jacob, the third" of the American Notestines, even though he wasn't referred to as such. His grandfather was the first Jacob. From this point on we will refer to Jacob Asbury as Jacob. His father died Feb 19, 1847, and his mother Nancy married the Rev. William T. Tritch on December 27, 1847. Jacob had a brother Thomas, and two sisters, Jane and Nancy. His sister Nancy married William Jones, and Jane married Emanuel Peters.
"Nancy Hatfield (born about 1823 in Ohio) was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Archer) Hatfield, who came to Allen County in 1825. They came there from Dayton, Ohio as part of a group that included Elizabeth's father, Benjamin Archer, his wife and other family members. The Archers were originally from Philadelphia. Thomas was born in 1791 and died in Allen County in 1863. Elizabeth was born in 1794 and died in Allen County in 1857. They were both buried in the Hatfield Cemetery there.
"Shortly after the Civil War started, Jacob and his brother enlisted in the Union Army. Jacob enlisted as a private on August 5, 1862, in the 88th Indiana Infantry, and was assigned to Company "C". Thomas joined the 30th Indiana Infantry. Jacob's service record indicates he had gray eyes, brown hair and was five feet seven inches tall. On June 9, 1863, he was promoted to Corporal, and on March 1, 1864, to Sergeant. Most of the time he was flag bearer. He was wounded in a battle near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in February of 1863. After participating in Sherman's "March To the Sea", he was discharged on June 7, 1865. His group then returned to Indiana where they were paid off and disbanded on June 19, 1865.
"After the war, Jacob, his brother and sister, mother and step-father all moved to Chillicothe, Missouri. Jacob met and married Naomi Burdick, his step-father performing the ceremony at her parent's house in Chillicothe on April 9, 1866... (more about Jacob III).
