"Harry Edwin Randles, son of James and Eleanor Patton Randles, came to Nebraska in 1895 with his parents and brother Marcus, to make their home. They had purchased the place known as the Garten farm in Boone county.
"Edwin and his father had come earlier by train. Theylived in the immigrant car while they made arrangements to live on the Garten farm. The year 1894 proved to be the drouth year and the crops were very meager. They insisted that the former owner keep all that he had been able to raise.
"Edwin was born on June 20, 1871 in Menrad County Illinois near the town of Oakford. He was the oldest of five children, Edwin, Estella, Bertha, Marcus, and Frankie...
"Edwin and Marcus purchased what was known as the Bailey place just across the road from their home. After the death of their father in 1905 he and Marcus traded his 80 acres for the 80 acres Marcus inherited from his father.
"In 1907 Edwin married Ona Viola Farmer daughter of George and Eva Dufoe Farmer. Ona was one of five children...
"Edwin and Marcus worked together for years, threshing and shelling for many neighbors and helping each other with the harvesting and various jobs about the farm.
"Edwin purchased his first car, a Ford Model T, in 1912. He installed running water and a Delco plant for electric lights between 1916 and 1920.
"In 1926 they moved to Cedar Rapids, buying the house that had belonged to his cousin Samuel Monk in Southeastern Cedar Rapids.
"In 1931 they moved back to the farm. In 1939 they moved briefly to the farm just north of their farm, and their younger son James took over the farm. Then they moved to Cedar Rapids where they lived in their home until Ona's death on August 28, 1947.
"After his wife's death, he purchased a small house one block west of his former home, where he spent his summers. He lived with his children during the winter months.
"May 11, 1958 he died and is laid to rest beside his wife in the Sunset Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska."
