"Watson Orr Dufoe - Better known as Uncle Watt Dufoe, he and his family settled on their homestead south and east of what is now Cedar Rapids.
"Watson Dufoe was born April 8, 1844 in Harlan, Illinois, the son of Oliver and Lucinda Dryer Dufoe. His father Oliver Dufoe was born in Three Rivers, Canada. Oliver and his brother Edward Defoe came to the United States while they were still young men, making their way by playing violins for dances.
"Watson was one of ten children. They were Mary, Esther A., Edward, Watson Orr, Minnie Isabel, Lorenzo Prosser, Phebe Elmaette, Levi, Amanda L., and John E. Edward died when a baby. In the 1850's they moved to Iowa. Lucinda died soon after they arrived in Iowa, leaving that large family motherless.
"A few months later Oliver married Cassander Lyon. They had five children, Evan Srack, Sarah G., Lucy E., Charles Henry (Henny), and James G.
"Watson married Margaret Purkey July 1, 1866. Margaret Purkey was born September 13, 1846 in Ohio. Margaret (Maggie) was the daughter of Levi and Mary (Waltermire) Purkey. She was one of ten children. Six of the brothers and sisters died before 1888. The four remaining children were Sarah, Margaret, Andrew, and Mollie.
"They had six children, Eva E., Mina M., Charles Logan, Avis A., Andrew Russell, and Mollie M. (continues on with a genealogy of the children Eva, Willis, Mina, Everett, Estella, Charles Logan, Avia A., Mollie...)
"Watson was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a member of Company B 4th Iowa Cavalry. His great grandchildren and grand nephews and nieces can remember his clipping a thimble from their Aunt Maggie's head with his old army sword.
"Shortly after they came to Nebraska one of his brother Lorenzo's horses died. The Indians stole Watson's team between them. They lived on adjoining farms. They did their farming with one team that year.
"Watson was one of the organizers of the Pinnacle Hill Methodist Church. He was a member of the first administrative board of the Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. He was a class leader for years at the meetings held in the District 15 school house before the Pinnacle Hill Church was built.
"July 1, 1916 Watson and Maggie celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. The celebration was held on their lawn with about 200 in attendance.
"Margaret departed this life June 30, 1931. Watson died December 12, 1932.
They are both laid to rest in the Main Cemetery now known as the Belgrade Cemetery."
