Rogers, Enos (b. ABT 1730, d. ABT 1789)
Note: BIOGRAPHY: The Family and Ancestry of Eno Rogers and Margaret Evans of Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; by Milton D. Forsyth, Jr., pub 1992 in Chapel Hill, NC; p 1-3;
Enos Rogers (s/o Robert). "Born, circa 1730, in Norriton Twp., Philadelphia Co., PA. Died, circa 1789, in Baltimore Twodn, Baltimore Co., MD. Occupation: Farmer.
Enos Rogers was the son of Robert rogers of Norriton Twonship in what is now Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and a descendant of Welsh Quaker settlers of Pennsylvania. He appears to have been born about 1730, as the births of his brothers and sisters are recorded up to about that time. His marriage record, along with the tax records of 1769 and his father's will of 1773 (which is discussed later), are definitive as to his identity, even though his birth record has not been located. He and Margaret Evans were married in 1757 at the Plymouth Meeting-House, which still stands in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. He would have been about 27 years old and Margaret was 23. They were among themain family members present at the second marriage of his father six years later.
"Enos is listed next to his father on the 1769 tax list for Norriton Township (Philadelphia Co. tax lists for 1769, Norriton Twp., in Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd Ser., Vol, 14, pp. 68-69). On 25 Apr 1769 Enos Rogers, along with "his wife and children" and Joshua and Ruth dickinson, Margaret's sister, and their children, were given certificates of discharge from the monthly meeting of Gwynedd/Plymouth to the monthly meeting of Warrington, which is in York County, Pennsyolvania (The William Wade Hinshaw Quaker Meeting Records, Vol. V, Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, [hereinafter Hinshaw, Vol. V, Gwynedd], p. 161). John Rees and his wife, who was Margaret's elder sister Catherine, and thier children preceeded them to Warrington in 1767. Calwallader Evans, Margaret's youngest brother, moved there earlier in 1769.
"On 12 Aug 1769 Enos Rogers produced a certficate at the Warrington Monthly Meeting for hs wife and their six children, probably listed in the order of their birth: John, Mordecai, Sarah, Rebecka, Evan and Levi. Joshua Dickenson also produced a certificate for his family at that time (Warrington Monthly Meeting, first part, Minutes, p. 166; second part, p. 432; [Monthly Meeeting hereinafter MM]). The Warrington meeting-house is located in Wellsville, Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Originally a log structure, it was replaced in 1769, the year of the Rogers' arrival, with a stone building. The original structure was enlarged once, and was restored in 1949. It was in this meeting-house that the families worshipped for the next nine years.
"Margaret Rogers was a representative for her meeting at the Quarterly Meeting held at Warrington on 22 Sep 1777. The representatives prepared a report to be presented at the yearly meeting in Philadelphia. They responded to a standard "query," a list of questions as to the performance of their meetings. They stated that "All our Meetings for Worship and Discipline... have been duly and timely attended by a considerable number of Friends, tho' the sorrowful account of many neglecting this necessary duty especially on Week Days, also of some when met to perform that Solemn Duty giving way to drowsiness yet continues...A good degree of Love and Unity Subsists amongst us...Talebearing, Backbuting and Evil reports are generally discouraged...A good degree of care is taken to bring up those under our care in Plainnenss, tho' we have reason to believe too many are neglectful of their Duty therein, there being a manifest deviation in some of them from that Plainness in Dress and Simplicity of Manners that Truth leads to. Mostly clear of holding Slaves [a practice to which Quakers were opposed] and some care taken of those who are necessarily under our care...A concern rests on ourMinds pretty generally to maintain our Discipline and deal with offenders as recommended, tho' no always without some unnecessry delay." (Warrington and Fairfax Quarterly Meetings, p. 257-260).
"At the meetings of 17 Feb 1778 Enos Rogers requested a certificate for he and Margaret and their six children (not named) to transfer to Gunpowder, a monthly meeting in Baltimore County, Maryland, near Cockeysvill,e and the certificate was signed on 11 Apr 1778 (Warrington MM, first part, Minutes, pp. 231-232; second part, p. 432). The Rogers presented the certificate from Warrington to the Gunpowder Monthly Meeting on 30 May 1778. The children were listed and included among them was Rachel, who must have been born while the family resided in Warrington, but Rebecca was not among the six children (Gunpowder MM, Minutes (Men's Meeting), 1768-1784, p. 197, p. 28). Evan isincorrectly listed as "Enos" in the men's minutes, but in the women's minuters his name is correctly stated (Gunpowder MM, Minuets, Women's Friends, 1776-1787, p. 28).
"In the 1783 tax assessment Enos Rogers is listed in the Middle River Lower Hundred, an area to the northeast of the current City of Baltimore and bounded on the SW by the Middle River, on the NE by the Gunpowder River estuary into the bay, on the SE by Chesapeake Bay, and on the NW by a line running E-W through about Perry Hall, Maryland. He owned no property, but had 5 horses and 7 cattle valued at 44 pounds and other property valued at 17 pounds for a total of 61 pounds, and was assessed 15 shillings, 3 pence. The number of free males in the family was 4, and total white inhabitants was 8 (1783 Maryland Tax Assessment, BaltimoreCounty, Middle River Lower Hundred, p. 7). No deeds, will, or guardian papers in his name or any of the family names were found in the Maryland records.
"The family appears to have attended the Patapsco Meeting, a submeeting of the Gunpowder Monthly Meeting, which at the time of their arrival was located on tghe Harford Road in Baltimore county, in an area now but not then within the city (This is the location tocay of the Friends Burying Ground, Harford Road, or the "Quaker Cemetery" on the north side of Harford Road [State Route 147] at the southwest end of Clifton Park, in Baltimore). In Jan 1781 the meeting was moved to a new building, the construction of which had been authorized on 29 Jul 1779, which still stands. It is on the eastern side of Jones Falls at the southeast corner of Aisquith (then Loyd Lane) and Fayette (then Pitt) Streets, at what in that time was the eastern limits of "Baltimore Town." The meeting was renamed the "Baltimore Meeting," but it remained under the Gunpowder Monthly Meeting until 1792. In this circumstance the Rogers family would have had to travel some 8-12 miles from the Middle River area to attend the meetings, and it is probable that they moved after 1783 nearer to or within the growing town of Baltimore.
"Themove appears especially likely because the Baltimore Preparative Meeting noted on 28 Sep 1786 that "The committe to the care thereof" heretofore agreed upon with the friend who formerly had the care thereof" [i.., for about 12 pounds a year]. And the following year the minutes note on 25 Oct 1787, "The Committee appointed to agree with a Person to take care of this House [i.e., the Aisquith Street Meeting House] do Report they have agreed with Enos Rogers for that purpose for which he is to have Seven pounds, ten shillings; a new friend was selected for this position on 27 Nov 1788.
"As noted below in mid-1789 Margaret Rogers, "widow," requested a certificate of removal to Wilmington Monthly Meeting, having already moved to that area. This places the death of Enos Rogers between November 1788 and July 1789, probably early in 1789; the 1793 marriage certificate of their daughter Rachel states her father was "late of Baltimore town." No record of his death is found in the Baltimore Deceased Members book prepared in 1881, but the early records are spotty. Almost certainly under the circumstances hewas buried at the Aisquith Street Meeting House Burying Ground (called "City Ground" in the records) where he had so recently been the grave digger and custodian of the meeting house."
