BIOGRAPHY: Cedar Rapids, Nebraska 1884-1984, 978.251/C1 H2C, p 8, Pioneer Sketches;
"Lewis Leslie -- born February, 1837 i Monroe County, Ohio, where he grew up on a farm. When he was seventeen years old, he accepted a position as a teacher. In 1854, he worked in a printing office and during the war he was the editor of "The Plaindealer" in Oquawke, Illinois. Lewis was also a postmaster in Oquawka for five years. He served as a U.S. gauger, when employed by the Internal Revenue Service. He was a captain on a Mississippi Steamboat before coming to the Cedar Valley to reside in 1877. He was active in the development of Cedar Rapids until his death May 17, 1911."

Later, he bacame a Justice of the Peace."
