NOTES:
Notes from daughter P Yochem - Orville was an only child. He lived in Indiana at age 2 (so his mother could take care of her mother who was blind), San Pedro when he was 5, Indiana when he was 10 years old. He learned to speak German before learning English, and had fond memories of the time spent in Indiana as a youth. He figures he lived in 21 different places in Los Angeles alone while growing up. Orville recalled a camping trip his family went on when he was about 10 years old, to Klamath Falls, OR, where he walked the entire distance beside the family wagon.
Notes from grand daughter Lisa:
Oriville met Lena at the ship yards at Teminal Island, where Lena was a secretary and Orville was her boss before they were married.
Orville proved to be a very successful businessman. He had success in real estate, as well as the stock market, where he studied the companies and their products out, investing in the ones he thought would go someplace.
Even though independently wealthy, in retirement, Orville and Lena lived in an unpretentious mobile home community. Orville and Lena enjoyed foreign travel, visiting Europe and South America, amongst others.
Orville was of sound mind in old age, though he suffered from emphezima, chronic bronchitis, and congestive heart failure.

We need to add more stories and information!

"Clark Robiinson was the first to settle Oelrichs, South Dakota, followed by an older brother, Tom, who wrote to the third brother, Grant, to 'pack up, come to Oelrichs, as it is a very promising country of farm land.'"
"While Tom was looking over the land and choosing some to rent with a house and proper buildings, his wife, Ida, and youngest son, Leslie, were traveling by wagon with their possessions and furniture from Belgrade, Nebraska to Oelrichs."
"In one year they were settled in their new home, so sent for their daughter, Elsie, sho was attending school in Tennesee, living with her aunt and uncle, Guy Robinson, their third son, was still living in Belgrade, Nebraska with his wife, Pearl, and two little daughters, Eleanor and Irene."
"In the meantime, after Elsie arrived to be with her parents, they traveled to Hot Springs by horse and buggy to the 'Adoption Welfare Department', and brought home thier choice of a younger sister for Elsie, a three and a half-year-old girs, named Rebecca Marie."
"Before long, World War I hit the States and we were involved in war. Leslie was drafted into the Army and had to leave the United States in June, 1918 to go to Paris, France to do duty on a big ammunitions train. He was gone until May 19, 1919, returning home to Oelrighs safely."
"During the horrors of World War I, a terrible influenza epidemic hit and many people died. Guy's wife, Pearl, was one of these. leaving him alone to care for and raise their two little daughters. Guy brought his daughters to Grandpa and Grandma Robinson's home from Belgrade for care, love and to live on the Robinson farm while helping his 'paw' do the work."
"After harvest time in 1920, Leslie left Oelrichs and went to California to follow his trained professional trade of house plastering. This left Tom and Guy to carry on the farm chores alone."
"The local school board needed a school teaher for the Homestead School, which was in district number 4. The district advertised and Miss Madge Cooper from Sturgis responded."
"The Tom Robinson home was selected for boarding and rooming Miss Cooper for two school year terms, 1918 and 1919."
"During 1920, Guy and Miss Cooper were married. What a happy wedding day, and what a chairvari celebration was given them."
"Uncle Clark felt sorry for them and turned one of his bedrooms over to them for privacy on their wedding night."
"Many neighbors, friends and relatives presented them with gifts."
"Soon the patter of baby feet echoed through the Robinson home and farm. Their first son, James C. Robinson, was born in August of 1921."
"Times became hard on the farm, so an auction was planned before the arrival of their second son, Tom K., expected in April, 1923. The Tom Robinson family had received glowing letters from Leslie and other relatives to come to California to live. Plenty of work and jobs to be had and no freezing weather."
"Clark Robinson had two sons, Vincent and Dale, who are still in Oelrichs.
Tom and Ida Robinson had six children. The surviving two are their daughters, Elsie and Rebecca Marie."
"They had eighteen grandchildren before Ida's death in 1936. Tom saw sixteen great-grandchildren before his death in 1956."

BIOGRAPHY:
Occupation: Ran away from home at 14, at age 17 owned 40 acres in what is now the heart of Spokane, WA where he also bought horses and broke them, furniture store in San Pedro, house movers, resturant owner, candy store, etc., Real Estate and Investments (as noted on death certificate).
Occupational notes from Grand-daughter, Jean, 22 Jan 1979: He left home when he was about 11 years old and claimed he learned to read off railroad box cars. He traded horses with Indians, had a candy store, furniture store in San Pedro, a house moving business, started restaurants and then sold them -- (had one of the first after the San Francisco fire, tried raising potatoes near Idaho Falls, Idaho, also invested in real estate. He did many things during his life, but didn't stick to any one for long.
Notes from grand daughter Pat - The family was probably Catholic. John Yochem's father died when he was 10. John Mathias had no schooling. He left home at 11 or 14, as he bore the bulk of responsibility for the family, even though he wasn't the oldest brother. At age 17 John had 40 acres in Spokan, WA. It was during this time that he bought horses from the Indians. He would buy horses to break, then sell them. One time he was captured by the Indians when his horses looked liked some that had been stolen from them, but they released him when the horses wouldn't respond to Indian commands. He had a candy store in Salt Lake City, Utah, which he considered his only failure, which he pulled out of due to feuding between the Mormon and non-Mormon employees. Furniture stores may have been a specialty; he had one at the time Orville was born, he had one in Red Mountain, Randsburg, CA, a small mining town. He was a land speculator in Coos Bay, OR, and elsewhere. He was an entrepuer who opened new business, then sold out. Upon hearing about the San Fransisco earthquake, he took a load of wagon supplies and sold it out. He was in the Yukon, Canada, during the gold rush. He did business on a hand shake, and considered himself a good judge of character.
He was a carpenter at one time. Orville tells of a camping trip vacation his family went on to Klamath Falls, OR, when he was 10 (abt 1904). Orville walked the entire distance along side the family wagon. When they arrived, John wanted to go fishing, so he built a rowboat. John prided himself on being a good judge of character, and would lend money on a handshake. Around 1931 he received a Walnut Grove in El Monte, CA in payment of a loan. They stayed in a little apartment with no electricty, over the irrigation pumps. The roars of lions could be heard from a nearby lion farm. Orville recalls living in 21 to 25 places in Los Angeles alone while growing up. John couldn't stand to live in a house for more than six months and would move, even if it was just across the street. He had many fascinating stories to tell of his varied adventures. In his later years, he had Parkinson's.
Notes from ggdaughter Marianne:
A family story is that he was the first one to open up a restaurant in San Francisco immediately after the earthquake (1906), and sold it at a profit when a 2nd resturant opened. He had a premonition that something had happened to his father. At that exact time, his father was accidentally killed while chopping wood, when his ax came off its handle striking him in the chest. (1870 Michigan City, La Porte, Indiana.)
Note from Pat: At age ten, John had a vision (not a premoniton). When returning home he learned it was true.
In Pat V's version, Mathias was killed while working in a basement, where an object, hurled through the air, struck and killed him. They traveled extesnively overseas and abroad.
One time while he and Eliza were visiting his sister Mary on Hawaii, he sudenly had the urge to leave immediately, and wanted to take the next boat off the island. Eliza convinced him to wait till the next day when a boat was leaving for the states.
They enjoyed camping at O'dell Lake, OR.
Notes from ggdaughter Lisa:
Grandpa Yochem, told that his father, John Mathias, held a great many different kinds of jobs. He started working at a very young age. When applying for a job, he always told the employers he had the desired experience (even if he did not), and he usually got the job. He was smart, and picked up quickly on how to do the new job, so no one ever caught on.
Also recalls the ax story.

She lived in IN without John two times. She stayed with her mother. She had a brother and a sister. Her husband spoke high German, though she spoke low German. When they visited Europe for the Passion Play in Oberamagod (sp?), they could only understand her.

OBITUARY: Elgin Review, 1 Sep 1905, compliments of Brett Robinson;
John Samuel Robinson
Sunday morning brought to the people of this vicinity the sad news of the sudden death during the night of J.S. Robinson, at his home four and a quarter miles north of Elgin, from stomach trouble and heart failure. Mrs. Robinson was absent at the time and had been for a couple of weeks, visiting in Tennessee, and she was at once telegraphed for, arriving on Tuesday. Mr. Robinson had not been in very rugged health for several years past, having had two or three rather severe sick spells. Of late, however, he had seemed as well as usual, being able to be up and around and come to town occasionally. His death, therefor, which came so suddenly and practically without warning, was a distinct surprise and shock to the community.
John Samuel Robinson was born in the state of Indiana, about sixty-eight years ago. At the age of sixteen he moved with his father's family to the then new state of Wisconsisn. In Richland county, Wisconsin, he was married about forty-eight years ago to Mary Ann Leslie. To this union nine children were born. Of these, four were girls and five boys. Two girls and four boys still survive, as follows: Mrs. Lena Gollman, of Tennessee: Mrs. Lucia Patchen, of Fullerton, Nebraska: Thos. S. Robinson, of California; and Grant, Clark, and Roy Robinson of Elgin. Deceased came to Boone County, Nebraska, in 1871, settling near Cedar Rapids. His good wife died in 1896. He was married to Mrs. Clark Finch, of Tennessee, in 1900, and shortly afterward moved to the vicinity of Elgin, Nebraska, where he has resided on his farm. He was a man of mild and gentle disposition, and exemplary habits, upright and honorable in all his dealings with his fellow men. For about twenty years past he has been a member of the Seventh Day Advent Church, and Rev. Beems, of Wayne, a minister of that denomination officiated at his funeral which was held from the West Cedar Valley Congregational church on Wednesday. The interment took place in Elgin Cemetery.

OBITUARY; 18 Sep 1896, Boone County Outlook; compliments of Brett Robinson;
Died - At Fremont, Nebraska, of malarial fever, Monday morning, September 14, 1896, Mrs. Mary Ann Robinson, aged about fifty six years.
Mary Ann Robinson was born in Monroe county, Ohio, in the year 1840. Her mother died when she was about ten years of age. When twelve years of age she moved with her father to Wisconsisn. Soon after this her older sister left home and upon her was placed the burden and responsibility of caring for her father's house. She was married to her now bereaved husband in 1858, when about 18 years of age. Nine children were born to her. Seven are living and two are dead. Filena Eulain, the eldest, is the wife of C.P. Bollman, and lives in Tennessee; Thomas lives in Cedar Rapids and Grant in Kansas; Jennia died when fourteen years of age; Clark B. is still at home; Lucy is married to Wm. Patchen: Roscoe died in infancy; Lillie Grace is now a missionary in Jamacia; Roy, the youngest, is with us. In 1871, about twenty-five years ago, Mrs. Robinson came with her husband and family to Nebraska and became one of the first settlers in the Cedar Valley. From childhood she had been accustomed to pioneer life. It was so even in Ohio, her native state. It was so in Wisconsin, and much of the time during her stay in Nebraska. She inherited a strong religious nature, and her inclination to peity was encouraged by her christian father. Early in life she followed the example of her parents and became a student of the Bible, and through all her life this book was her companion and guide. She was converted when but a girl, and joined the United Brethren church. Soon after her marriage she united with the New School Presbyterian church. After this when there was no society of that denomination convenient, she with her husband joined the Methodist church, and remained a member of that denomination until about sixteen years ago. She has become a zealous member of the Seventh day Adventist church, and died an ardent believer in the faith of that denomination. She was noted for her conscientious devotion to duty, whether to her home or to her church. She had her full share of the sorrows and sufferings of this life, but her christian faith never failed her and her patience was allowed to have its perfect work.
On the 30th of August they started from their home to attend the annual camp meeting of their church at Fremont, Nebraska. Soon after arriving at Fremont she was seized with the sickness which after ten days in spite of all that medical aid and expert nursing could do, terminated in her death. The body was brought home on the evening train last Monday. The funeral services were conducted at the house by the writer on the Tenth day afternoon, and the remains were laid to rest at six o'clock in the North cemetery.
IN MEMORIAM
Whereas it has pleased the Supreme Ruler of us all to receive to death the beloved wife of her Comrade John S. Robinson, and whereas we realize the great loss Comrade Robinson and his family have sustained by the death by of a loving wife and mother, Therefore be it Resolved by the members of Caddell Post, No. 74 G.A.R. express and extend our heartfelt sympathy and condolence in this their hour of deep suffering
Resolved that this resolution be published to the public.

Silas and Amanda Ellen (Richards) Robinson:
"Silas Robinson was the son of Andrew Robinson and Rebecca Robinson. Andrew was the youngest of ten children born to William Robinson and Nancy Miller Robinson.
"William was born in Ireland in 1782 and came to America as a young man. He settled in Pennsylvania and married Nancy in 1800. They then moved to Kentucky where they started their family of ten children. He was a farmer and raised cattle. Because of slavery found there he moved his family to Tippecanoe County in Indiana in 1820. In 1837, he sold his farm there and moved onto a farm in Kosciusko County in Seward Township. He lived in 160 acres until his death."

William and Nancy (Miller) Robinson, by Lee Etta Ellen Ogorek, Santa Ana, Calif.
"Carrie and I often talked of the old unpainted house on the rise at the end of the lane that was called "home", where we both were born.
"Carrie Robinson was born September 5, 1902 on the old Robinson homeplace on Section 9 of Seward Township, on which four generations of Robinsons had lived. She prized a parchment deed, signed by President Van Buren, attesting to the fact that 160 acres was purchased from the Government in 1837 by her great-grandfather, William Robinson (1778-1847), whose sons purchased adjoining land.
"William, born in Virginia, and Nancy Miller (1781-1857), born in North Carolina, were married in Franklin County, Kentucky in 1804. William was a breeder of horses. Their sons, Henry, William, Robert, John, James, George, and daughters, Ann and Sarah, were born there. Opposing slavery, William and Nancy left for Indiana in 1820 where Samuel and Andrew were born in Tippecanoe County.
When Kosciusko County opened, William and his sons were early landowners in 1837. The whole Robinson clan traveled the Wabash River to Akron and cut through the woods, braving wild animals, to their land in the old Franklin (Seward) Township and built log cabins. The first orchard, bankbarn, school, and church in the township was on their land. After William's death, Nancy continued to live on the homeplace with her youngest son, Andrew (1829-1883).
"...All of the Robinsons were buried in the old Franklin Cemetery on Road 14, near where Carrie had gone to school."

Alvin Robinson:
"...The grandparents of our subject, William and Nancy (Miller) Robinson, were born, reared and married in the State of Kentucky, and were the parents of eleven children, nine being natives of the same State -- Henry, William, Ann, Sarah, Robert, John, James, Samuel, George and Andrew. The grandparents came from near Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky, in 1829 to Indiana, when they located in Tippecanoe County, and in 1837 removed to Seward Township, Kosciusko County, and settled on the farm which is now owned and occupied by the widow and children of his youngest son, Andrew...".
